Dear Editor,
The Barksdale Cancer Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped in any way to make our annual poker run a success. Because of the generosity of our bikers and sponsors we were able to raise over $4,500, all of which will be used for cancer patients in Charlotte County.
A special thanks to our food donors, Castle’s Butcher Shop and Chase City Produce, both of Chase City, and Pepsi Bottling of Danville. As always, thanks to all the ladies who bake those delicious desserts for us whenever we need them. We would like to especially thank Wiley and Bonnie Royster for their time and effort in mapping out a beautiful route for the ride. We especially want to thank Woodmen of the World Lodge 179 for providing breakfast and flags for the bikers.
The Barksdale Cancer Foundation was founded in 1999 for the sole purpose of having a means of support for cancer patients. Every dime raised by the organization goes to help someone within the county who is fighting a battle with cancer. Over $114,000 has been awarded in the form of grants since the inception of the local non-profit.
Aside from giving grants to its patients, the foundation helps them purchase Ensure at a greatly reduced price and can provide free wigs and caps to those who have lost their hair due to treatments. The organization has also helped to author a transportation brochure to help those who need help getting to and from doctor visits and treatments.
In addition, the Barksdale Cancer Foundation gives a yearly $1,000 scholarship to a graduating county student who is pursuing a medical career, preferably in the area of oncology.
If you know of someone in need of help in their fight against cancer, please contact Terri Jones, treasurer of BCD, at 434-735-8196. If you would like to make a tax-deductible donation you may do so by mailing it to: Terri Jones, 3676 Jeb Stuart Hwy., Red Oak, VA 23964.
Please remember that every cent of your donation will go to a local cancer patient. Possibly even someone you know. Thank you for helping us with our mission of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.”
Sincerely,
Wendy S. Lankford, President
