The RandolphHenry Varsity varsity boys basketball team dropped two competitive games last week. Wednesday, they lost a home matchup with district-leading Bluestone 86-76, and Friday lost a back-andforth contest at Goochland 69-60.
Against the firstplace Barons, the Statesmen jumped out to an early lead and held it throughout the first quarter. R-H led 17-10 at the end of the first, but Bluestone rallied to take a 39-28 lead into halftime.
The Statesmen stormed back in the third cutting the lead back to two at 61-59 going into the final frame. After taking the lead back early in the fourth quarter, R-H could not stretch it more than three points at anytime.
The Barons gained the advantage with 2 minutes to play as they scored several baskets after missing foul shots which extended their lead, winning 86-76.
Tremaine Pugh led the Statesmen with 25 points, 20 in the second half alone. Sam Williams added 14 and Billy Brantley 13.
Friday, R-H traveled to Goochland. The Statesmen trailed 39-38 at halftime, but took the lead by as many as eight midway through the third, and held a 53-50 advantage to start the fourth.
A couple of key turnovers and the failure to hit their shots made the Statesmen fall behind by six with 3 minutes to play.
Goochland hit their foul shots down the stretch and came away with the victory.
Williams had a hot hand, leading the team with 18 points. Pugh scored 14 and Pettus had 11.
“The team played really well in both of these games. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a win in either,” said head coach James Graves. “It is frustrating to have these kind of efforts and lose.”
R-H will host the Amelia Raiders on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
