Momentum was on the side of Randolph-Henry High School’s junior varsity (JV) girls basketball team for much the game Wednesday evening, but visiting Prince Edward County High School pulled out the victory in the end, 20-16.

“I am proud of how these JV players played against Prince Edward,” Lady Statesmen Head Coach Sandy Mayhew said. “After a 2-week winter break and a shuffle in the roster, the JV team has been reduced to six players. Two players have been moved up to play at the varsity level, which is a wonderful opportunity for them.”

The Lady Eagles won the first quarter 11-4 Wednesday, but then the Lady Statesmen began to chip away at the lead, outscoring Prince Edward 5-2 in the second quarter. Randolph-Henry also outscored the visitors in the third quarter, 4-2, after tightening up on defense to trail only 15-13 going into the final period.

The Lady Statesmen grabbed a 16-15 lead with less than three minutes left in the contest, but the Lady Eagles hit several late free throws to put them ahead for good.

For Randolph-Henry, Anisha Marable and Dajah White had six points apiece, Lillian Jubb added four points,  Kaniya Morris had six rebounds, Carletta Anderson grabbed five and Brandy Hall had three.
