The Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) men’s basketball team topped visiting Germanna Community College 75-69 on Sunday afternoon in a Virginia Community College System contest to earn a season sweep of the Grizzlies in its regular season finale.
The win improved SVCC to 13-8 on the season.
The Panthers will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to begin defense of their USA National Postgrad title beginning Thursday afternoon when they meet Combine Academy at 1:40 p.m. in a first round contest.
SVCC is the three-time defending champion, having captured national postgrad titles in 2015, 2016 and 2017.
“We have been very fortunate the past few years to have some extremely talented teams,” said SVCC Head Coach Dennis Smith. “We have a young team this season, but they have been fighting all year, and I expect nothing less from them this week. All season, it has been the ‘next player up philosophy’ due to injuries. We will need to play extremely well and catch a few breaks to have a chance.”
Against Germanna on Sunday, SVCC got out to a slow start but took a 20-18 lead on a bucket by Isaac Edwards at the six-minute, 22-second mark of the first half.
Germanna went on a 12-3 run, but Justin Williams hit a bucket with less than 20 seconds left to cut the deficit to 30-25 at the halftime break.
SVCC trailed by as many as eight points early in the second half but came back after Germanna ran into foul trouble. The Panthers took a 60-59 lead on Williams’ three-point play at the 5:53 mark.
A trey by sophomore guard K.J. Reagans and a turnaround jumper by freshman forward Jackson Cox extended the lead to 67-60 at the 4:07 mark on the way to the victory.
Williams finished with 23 points and added six rebounds to lead SVCC, while Reagans scored 10 points and added three steals.
Lamar Edozle led Germanna with 25 points.
