A stew sale Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 8902 at 109 King St. will raise funds for future events.
Post Quartermaster Garland “Butch” Hamlett said the stewmaster for the annual fundraiser will be Clark Woodson, known as “Heavy Duty.”
Hamlett said proceeds from the sale will go toward other events the VFW hosts.
“With the funds we generate, we buy Buddy Poppies (that) we give out at Veterans Day, Memorial Day,” Hamlett said. “We have to buy them and then we give them out. Sometimes people will give us a donation, but we use (the proceeds) to offset certain programs that we support, programs that help veterans.”
Hamlett said the group uses social media and word of mouth to generate interest in the sale.
“I just try to get the word out,” Hamlett said. “Tell people we know who like stew to pass the word.”
He said the stew makes good meals that could be worth the investment.
“It’s good stew,” Hamlett said. “We have people come by and get eight, 10, 12 quarts at a time. If you freeze it, you can have it during the year … A lot of folks buy it in the wintertime, but I can eat it year-round.”
He encouraged members of the community to enjoy good food to benefit area veterans.
“Please come out and support the VFW by buying stew,” Hamlett said.
