The Barksdale Cancer Foundation (BCF) held their inaugural “Miss Janie’s Sit and Sip” wine festival in Phenix Saturday to help raise money for cancer patients in the county.

The event was held at the Gil- Har house.

Barksdale Cancer Foundation President Wendy Lankford said during the event there were 17 vendors, along with 5 wineries, 2 bands performing, a Bud Wagon and food provided by the Charlotte County Lions Club.

Wineries in attendance included American Way Country Wines, Chase City; Bright Meadows Farm, Nathalie; San Soucy Vineyards and Winery, Brookneal; Three Sisters of Shiney Rock, Clarksville and Tomahawk Mill, Chatham.

“It was the first such event done by Barksdale Cancer Foundation,” said Lankford. “We estimate over 400 in attendance.”

She said while the event was a huge success, no final numbers are known yet concerning how much money was raised for the organization.

However, Lankford said all money raised by the Barksdale Cancer Foundation goes to cancer patients in Charlotte County.

“According to a press release from the organization, “the Barksdale Cancer Foundation is a grassroots organization founded in 1999. Its sole purpose is to give monetary and services support to cancer patients in Charlotte County. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit manned by volunteers.”

The backdrop for the festival held rich history, as house tours were offered during the event of the federal-style house.

Jimmy and Pat Harding are the current owners of the home.

Pat previously said in the press release, “we are honored and pleased to be able to host such a unique fundraiser in our county, and for our patients.”

She said the Gilliam family owned the home from 1924 until it was purchased by them in 1995.

Additionally, the furnishings of the home include many antique pieces and a unique main staircase.

According to the release if someone may be in need of services they should call Lankford at (434) 470-1538.
