Randolph-Henry High School’s (R-H) varsity boys basketball team started 2019 with a pair of James River District losses, but the Statesmen bounced back Monday by topping visiting Buckingham County High School 48-45.

R-H Head Coach Josh Haskins said everyone on his team followed the game plan, and this was the key to getting the win.

When it comes to identifying his team’s best performance this season, he noted that he thinks Monday’s game is “right up there. In terms of following our game plan, I think it’s definitely the best. Now, collectively as a team, it might not be, but I think in terms of following the game plan, it definitely is.”

Leading the way for the Statesmen was senior guard/forward Masud Benu, who finished with 15 points.

“That’s probably his best game in his two years since he’s been here with us,” Haskins said.

R-H senior guard Jashon Puryear scored nine points, while sophomore guards Brenden Francisco and Ryetwon Callaham scored eight apiece.

Junior center Reginald Bullock collected seven rebounds, and freshman forward/center Chris Redd grabbed six.

This win for the Statesmen comes after they lost to Goochland and Nottoway high schools last week.

Randolph-Henry (3-6) will now play three games in three days, visiting Cumberland on Wednesday at 7 p.m., Amelia on Thursday at 7 p.m. and hosting Bluestone on Friday at likely after 8 p.m.
