Senior students and parents participated in Financial Aid Night on Thursday, Sept. 26. Presentations included Tierney Jackson from State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) for the GEAR UP Scholarship, Pamela Taylor from Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) for the Fast Forward CTE Certification Programs, and Brittany Perkinson and Shawn Clements from Longwood University Financial Aid for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) presentation.
Following the presentations, students participated in the Financial Aid Basics game in the library. This game allowed students to experience a real-life monthly income and expenses and take initiative to create a balanced budget.
During the debriefing each student shared one thing they learned. Here are some of the comments: I am not having kids. Cherish every dime. It makes you appreciate your parents more. Real life is hard. Pick up pennies on the sidewalk, even if they’re not heads up.
Students and parents interested in receiving assistance completing the FAFSA can attend FAFSA night on either Oct. 10 or 24 from 6-8 p.m. in the Randolph-Henry High School library. Be sure to bring 2018 tax information.
