Appomattox Court House National Historical Park and its friends group, the Appomattox 1865 Foundation, will commemorate the 155th anniversary of General Robert E. Lee’s surrender to Lt. General Ulysses S. Grant with special anniversary programs and activities April 8-12.

The commemoration will include guided talks and tours, a living history encampment and demonstrations, recreations of the Stacking of Arms ceremony Saturday and Sunday, and a breathtaking luminary program in the historic village.

Program highlights include two performances of “The Hannah Reynolds Story” by Wolfbane Productions at 7 p.m. Thursday and Saturday evenings (free to the public). An hour before each performance, participants can learn what historic documentation and archaeology tell about Hannah Reynolds’ life.

Immediately following Saturday’s performance, 4,600 candles will light the historic village to honor those emancipated in Appomattox County by the surrender. The luminary bags will feature the names of more than 3,700 known individuals who were emancipated on April 9, and visitors may walk the lit paths starting at 7:30 p.m. and continuing throughout the evening.

April 11-12, the park will host a living history encampment with firing and marching demonstrations, including an integrated living history battle walk and a special program exploring the contributions of the United States Colored Troops.

At 3 p.m. April 11, the museum will recreate the scene of Gen. Lee leaving the McLean House after the surrender as it happened on the day of the event.

Friday, April 10, the Appomattox 1865 Foundation will sponsor a Civil War Ball at the Appomattox Inn & Suites from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided, with a cash bar available in the lobby. (Civil War era period attire, evening wear, or modern business casual is acceptable).
