Summer learning camps offered through Longwood’s Speech, Hearing and Learning Services (SHLS) will be held online July 6-10 via Zoom.

“For years, we have offered fun, high-quality summer learning experiences,” Stephanie Bailey, a clinical educator at SHLS, said. “While this year is unique and challenging, we wanted to continue to engage our community and provide a great opportunity for learning.”

Camp JumpStart, open to children ages 3-5 years old, promotes literacy and oral language skills, alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, emergent writing, and print concepts. Children will participate in daily, 30-minute live sessions via Zoom. Resources for activities will be provided.

Reader’s Theatre, open to children age 6 and older, focuses on developing reading fluency through a combination of reading practice and performance.

In daily sessions from 12:30-1:30 p.m., students will create their own skit by reading scripts developed from books and stories. Skits will be practiced and recorded during an afternoon session from 3:30-4 p.m. Recorded skits will be shared in a private YouTube link for students and families to view together. Reading assignments will be individually tailored for each student.

A laptop or device with a camera/microphone and access to reliable internet will be needed for both camps.

Registration is required by Friday, June 12, by calling (434) 395-2972 or emailing SHLS@longwood.edu.
