The Charlotte County Board of Supervisors (BOS) will hold a public hearing Monday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. to receive public comment and consider adoption of a resolution that states the county will not ban otherwise lawfully possessed and transported firearms from certain public spaces, as now permitted by state code.

In July the BOS passed a resolution stating the county would remain a Second Amendment sanctuary.

The original unanimous vote to establish the county as a Second Amendment sanctuary took effect in November.

The Second Amendment sanctuary resolution adopted by the county means they will not expend resources to enforce certain gun control measures perceived as violations of the Second Amendment.

On July 1, new legislation took effect, allowing a county to ban otherwise lawfully possessed and transported firearms from certain public areas.

During its July 13 meeting, BOS members heard from Virginia Citizens Defense League President Philip Van Cleave, who asked the board to continue opposition to any law that would unconstitutionally restrict the right of citizens and visitors to the county.

“I urge you to support the resolution vowing that Charlotte County will not implement any local gun control for its government buildings, parks, recreation and community center, or permitted events and adjoining streets as would be allowed under the new law.” Van Cleave said.

According to County Administrator Dan Witt due to the COVID-19 gathering restrictions, in person attendance is strongly discouraged for the public hearing, however, there is limited space available offered on a first come, first serve basis. Citizens must sit in a designated seating area allowing for six feet of separation.
