In just a week’s time frame Charlotte County has seen a rise in COVID-19 cases that is now causing the school system to look at further delaying the start of in-person instruction.

According to data released by the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) between Monday, Aug. 24, and Monday, Aug. 31, there were 10 new positive cases in Charlotte County.

According to the VDH, three of those cases are pediatric cases, with two of those being school-aged children.

Currently, Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) is 100% virtual learning. The school board voted at its August meeting to move the hybrid in-person opening to Monday, Sept. 14. According to CCPS superintendent, Robbie Mason, that date may be pushed back.

“The school board has added the re-evaluation of the Sept. 14 date for a hybrid return to in-person instruction to its Tuesday, Sept. 8 school board agenda,” Mason said.  “It is important that the school board have the most up-to-date health information as they consider in-person instruction for students, and the fact that three of these cases were pediatric cases is alarming.”

Mason further said CCPS is working with the Piedmont Health District to provide current and accurate information to the board as the COVID-19 pandemic is constantly changing.

The school board will meet in the RHHS auditorium Tuesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
