Billy RutledgeBilly Rutledge, of Red Oak, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the age of 99. Born in Charlotte County on Aug. 28, 1923 to Henry and Lelia Rutledge. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and an avid hunter, outdoorsman, farmer/gardener, hard working man who loved working with his hands and living off the land.

He served in the Army during World War II from Dec. 1943 to Dec. 1946 in the 699th Engineer Petroleum Distributing Company, working on the pipeline/refinery in Africa, China, India and Berma. He served his community as a member of the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Rutledge and Lelia Griles Rutledge; his wife, Nora Rutledge; his son, Ronnie Rutledge; great-grandson, Colton Osborne; great-great-grandson, Nathaniel Keeton; and brothers and sisters, Daniel Rutledge, Johnny Rutledge, Tom Rutledge, Dave Rutledge, Fannie Edgerton, Molly Foster and Sarah Toombs.

Surviving are his children, Brenda Sword, Joy Royster (Eddie), Kenneth Rutledge (Alice) and Shelby Long (Barry); grandchildren, Mark Dunn (Angie), Wendy Dunn, Teresa Osborne (Eddie), Daphne Lipscomb, Kevin Smith (Mary), Timothy Rutledge (Brittany), Melissa Snead (Kenny), Nora Lynn Puryear and Joseph Long; numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on Saturday, Aug. 12, from 7 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Newcomb Allgood Funeral Home in Chase City and all other times at Billy’s home. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Aug. 13, at Public Fork Christian Church at 3 p.m. with Rev. Jack Stewart and Rev. Roger Collier officiating. Interment with Military Honors followed in the church cemetery.
