The game itself took a bit of a backseat last Thursday, as the Randolph-Henry Statesmen also worked on raising money to fight pediatric cancer. As part of a special Versus Cancer event, the baseball team welcomed in pediatric cancer survivors, who were recognized in a pregame ceremony and had the chance to throw out the honorary first pitches. 

“It means everything to us,” said Randolph-Henry Baseball Coach Josh Barmoy. “We want to make a difference in our community but we cannot do it alone. We need help, and like always, our community stepped up by showing their support.” 

Helping the community has been a mantra Barmoy has worked to instill in his team since Day One. When they’re not on the field, you’ll find them helping at church fundraisers, cleaning up the school, moving supplies for a food bank or, in this case, raising money to fight cancer. 

Throughout Thursday’s game, various fundraisers were held to raise money for pediatric cancer research and support programs. 

“Funds were raised, we were able to recognize our brave cancer fighters & survivors, and ultimately raise awareness that these kids need help because they receive limited government funding for research to cure childhood cancer,” Barmoy said. “I personally am so thankful for our school, parents, and everyone who supported our idea and allowed it to come full circle. We have an amazing coaching staff that believes in complete student development beyond the diamond and I could not do this without our coaches’ support!” 

BREAKING DOWN THE SEASON 

The team isn’t doing so bad on the field either. Coming into this week at 10-1, they haven’t lost or even had a close game since April 5. The group averages 9 runs a game right now, while only giving up 42 total this season. And now, as they approach the halfway point, Barmoy said it’s been a season of learning. 

“We had six really impactful seniors last year that graduated, so we really did not know what to expect this year,” Barmoy said. “We have been learning and growing together as a group to find our identity. We are excited to play some challenging district games coming soon that will test our preparation and show us areas where we need to improve.”
