The season started off slow, but that was to be expected. The Randolph-Henry Statesmen lost a lot of firepower from last season’s senior-laden team, with multiple starters heading off to compete in college. That meant new faces filling new roles and that took a bit of time to come together. By this point, however, those young players have grown and developed. These aren’t the same first-year starters that suited up in March. On Thursday, May 29, the team secured a 5-3 win against Southampton in the regional quarterfinals, keeping their season alive.
“I think our team played as a whole,” said Statesmen Head Coach Josh Barmoy. “Everyone has a job and we battled together for a complete team win on the road.”
Playing on the road and tied at 3-3, the young Statesmen stepped up.
“When the game was tied at 3 and the momentum was heading toward Southampton we had a choice to make,” Barmoy said. “Are we going to give up or keep fighting? Guys never quit and played hard for each other. We got a key hit with runners in scoring position that was the difference in the game.”
The team has a few days to rest up and then it’ll be time to go back on the road. The Statesmen will head over to King William on Tuesday, June 3, for the regional semifinal. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. at the school, located at 80 Cavalier Drive in King William.
Honors for Randolph-Henry Statesmen
There were multiple Statesmen who also earned All-District honors en route to the playoffs. Four team members made the James River District First Team and one made the Second Team.
“It’s awesome for guys to get recognition from the James River District,” Barmoy said. “Other coaches saw what I see everyday from these guys. Happy for them and for our program continuing to get better each day.”
Making the James River District First Team were pitcher Sam Critzer, catcher Brennan Arrington, third baseman Parker Allen and outfielder Alex Duffey. On the James River District Second Team was designated hitter Cayden Hudson.
