Charlotte County officials have found their next administrator. On Wednesday, the board of supervisors named Landon B. Green to the position, effective as of July 1. Green will take over from current County Administrator Dan Witt, who announced back in February that he would be retiring this year.

Green is a Charlotte County native with a background in government business operations and agribusiness. He has had a 20-year career with BWX Technologies Inc., serving as a quality assurance lead auditor and then, since 2018, as the Manager of Supplier Oversight and Security in its government operations division. The Lynchburg-based company provides both nuclear components and fuel to companies and governments on a state and federal level here in America and in different parts of the world.

In Green’s current role, he has worked with what Charlotte County officials describe as “industry leaders and major corporations in metropolitan areas and with small businesses in rural localities. His experiences have allowed him to develop skills in building relationships with stakeholders while understanding and implementing complex policies within regulatory environments.”

Green is also an active member of Midway Baptist Church in Phenix, where he serves as a deacon and member of the church’s Long Range Planning Committee. As far as his education, Green earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Longwood University and a Master of Science degree in Business Management from Liberty University.  He is a graduate of Leadership Lynchburg and serves as a Council Member for that program.

A focus on economic development

Charlotte officials said they believed Green’s experience would help with economic development in the county.

“We are pleased to have found a County native who has a passion for the success of Charlotte County and who brings experience in business and agribusiness to help address our goal of broadening economic development in the County,” Supervisors Chairman Walt Bailey said in a statement. “We are confident in Landon’s ability to work with our excellent staff and with town, county, and business stakeholders to build stronger relationships and strengthen the local economy.”

Back in February, when Witt made his announcement to retire, the county had detailed several economic development projects they wanted his successor to focus on over the next three to five years.

That includes improving infrastructure, especially public utilities like water and sewer, to accommodate economic growth. Also, the board wants a study done of ways to promote further development of the Heartland Business Park, as well as a focus on making sure all residents and businesses have access to broadband internet. A third project will be finding ways to bring in more jobs to the area, by developing a trained workforce and recruiting new businesses.

In addition to those listed above, the next administrator will be asked to put together a plan to help grow tourism, especially agritourism, as well as drawing people to the trails and access to Kerr Lake and the Staunton River.

An opportunity in Charlotte County

In his own statement, Green said he was happy to serve the residents of the county he calls home.

“I am truly excited about this opportunity to serve the citizens of the County that is my home and that I love,” Green said. “I look forward to using my skills and experience in leadership, relationship building, and problem solving to help the Board of Supervisors implement its vision for the County. I appreciate the confidence that the Board has shown in me and look forward to building stronger relationships and processes to advance the County’s success.”

Green will take over in the role as of July 1, as mentioned, with Witt staying on through the end of August as a way of helping in the transition.
