Recently the Charlotte County Partnership of the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity completed its second repair project in Charlotte County, working with Darlene Jones of Drakes Branch as part of its A Brush With Kindness repair program. This program covers minor, exterior repairs to owner-occupied homes.

Repairs to Ms. Jones’ home included rebuilding two porches, repairing vinyl siding, replacing the crawl space access door, replacing a broken window, and pressure washing the home. Local builder Don Romaine, along with Habitat Construction Manager Matt Ridout and volunteers from the Charlotte County Partnership, worked over the course of a few very cold days to complete the repairs.

Ms. Jones was thankful for the repairs and the fact that the new porches were much safer for the young children living in the home.

To be considered for A Brush With Kindness, applicants must have been a resident of Charlotte County for 12 months and own their home. Applicants are assessed based on a demonstrated need for repairs to preserve the safety and durability of their home, an ability to pay for repairs, and a willingness to partner with Habitat. The payment for the repairs is kept affordable due to the reliance on volunteers providing most of the labor and the fact that no interest is charged during the repayment. The willingness to partner means the homeowner builds alongside the volunteers or provides refreshments and fellowship to those who are giving of their time.
