According to information from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), 70 percent of deaths in the United States are the result of chronic disease, making it the leading cause of death.
Chronic diseases include any incurable illness or health condition which persists for a year or more, according to NASM.
One of the most common chronic diseases is obesity, which NASM said 66 percent of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight.
Staying in shape has always been a passion of mine, and while finding the time to work out may not always be easy, the benefits are certainly worth it.
While there may not be many organized recreational activities in the immediate area for adults, there are plenty of alternatives to keep you motivated and on the road to getting in shape in no time.
For me, getting in shape is about building a better version of yourself, whether the results are seen physically or felt mentally.
Working out is not only beneficial to the body, but can be a great resource to help combat stress at the end of the day and give the body a little more energy.
For the average adult, NASM recommends at least 150 minutes of exercise per week.
This exercise goal can be achieved by taking a moderately paced walk-in the afternoons for only 30 minutes, five times per week.
Even simple cardiovascular exercises such as biking, walking or hiking for just 30 minutes can be beneficial and improve the overall health of the average adult.
Furthermore, resistance exercises can be added for greater benefit. We can either move it or lose it and muscle becomes even more important for aging adults to help maintain mobility and carry out simple everyday tasks such as walking the dog or carrying groceries.
I believe fitness should be a way of life for all of us. Regardless of age, race or socioeconomic status, all humans should desire to lead a happy and healthy life and have access to the knowledge to carry out those wishes.
While there may not be an abundance of local gyms in the area or organized fitness classes to attend, exercising outside or in the comfort of your own living room can still be a motivating experience while allowing for personal mediation at the same time.
