Drakes Branch woman fatally struck

Dinese Elizabeth Smith, 65, of Drakes Branch died after being struck by a 2014 Honda sport utility vehicle on Mechanicsville Turnpike Saturday, according to a press release from the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened at approximately 9:30 p.m.
“A deputy came upon a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian on Mechanicsville Turnpike near the Bell Creek Road intersection. The deputy found an adult female suffering from serious injuries after being struck by a 2014 Honda sport utility vehicle. The female was immediately transported by Hanover Fire-EMS to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased,” said the release.
According to the release, a preliminary investigation revealed the SUV was traveling eastbound on the Mechanicsville Turnpike, right before the Bell Creek Road Intersection when it struck Smith.
The release said Smith was attempting to cross traffic in an unlit section of the road.
“We extend our sincerest condolences to the family of Dinese Smith during this difficult time,” the release said.
