Ruby Allen, a Head Start teacher in Charlotte County, was swept away by flood waters with her son at the bridge on Mt. Harmony Road.

Search efforts are taking place Saturday morning for Allen along Mt. Harmony Road.

Sharon Harrup with STEPS and Allen’s colleague Pauline Stokes confirmed that Allen remains missing and that she was an instructor at Head Start in Charlotte County.

Volunteers and personnel began gathering for a search effort at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Police reported that Allen was “riding in the vehicle with two family members when the rushing floodwaters from a creek overran the bridge Thursday shortly before 7:30 p.m.”

“When the woman, an adult male and a 17-year-old male got out of the vehicle, they had to cling to the bridge railing as the rising water rushed around them,” a release from VSP Friday cited. “The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office was able to pull the 17-year-old male to safety. The two adults were swept away in the rushing floodwaters before the deputies could reach them. Overnight state police located the male subject deceased.”
