Randolph-Henry High School’s relatively inexperienced junior varsity (JV) boys basketball team has nevertheless shown enough strength to enter the 2019 portion of its schedule with a winning record — 4-2.
“(I’m) always happier to be above .500 than below .500, but I know that we’re continuing to work, and I’m definitely not going to be complacent with that,” Randolph-Henry Head Coach Mark Heintzleman said. “We’ve been around .500 pretty much every year that I’ve been the JV coach, at this (point), so we’ve got plenty of work to do. We’ve got a lot of games ahead of us, a lot of tough games, district games …”
The Statesmen will return from the holiday break Wednesday when they host Nottoway at 5:30 p.m.
This season, Randolph-Henry’s roster features seven sophomores, three freshmen and one eighth-grader.
Sophomore point guard Noah Walker is a key returner.
Heintzleman said eighth-grade forward/center Russell Thompson, who may already be as tall as 6 feet, 4 inches, is probably the team’s best player and best scorer. Sophomore center/forward Hamza Aziz is smart with the ball and sophomore guard Tyshaundre Walton is the team’s best defender, featuring a great, contagious work ethic.
“I think we can be up there in the tops of the district if we play to our ability and if we reach our potential,” Heintzleman said.
