A spark at an earlier age

The Randolph-Henry High School girls volleyball teams provided a volleyball camp June 3-5 for rising 5ththrough 8th-graders.

There were 19 participants June 3 and 4 and 17 campers June 5.

Twelve junior varsity (JV)/varsity players from the 2018-19 volleyball season came out and assisted Varsity Head Coach Nikki Elder, JV Head Coach Julianna Reeves and Central Middle School Head Coach Chrissy Barmoy in teaching the foundational skills needed for volleyball,

which included passing, setting, hitting and serving.

“So often, players are not introduced to

volleyball until they reach the sixth grade where they learn some of the basics in P.E. class,” Elder said. “At this age, students are allowed to try out for the middle school team; however,

they usually lack the foundational skills to be able to make the team. We are hoping by sparking interest in volleyball at an earlier age we can start building the middle school and, eventually, the

high school teams. We hope to make this an annual camp.”

Elder noted that coaches saw a lot of

improvement in the campers’ skills between June 3 and June 5.
