The young Charlotte County Majors all-star team went 1-2 in the 2019 Dixie Youth Baseball Major League District 5 Tournament in Sutherland, but the boys showed character through it all, earning the event’s sportsmanship award.
“We tell them every year that sportsmanship award is named after Carl Vassar,” Charlotte Majors Manager Gary Walker said.
“… He’s a longtime district director for District 5, and he’s from Charlotte County, so we go down there every year hoping that we can win that trophy, and we’ve won it four or five times. But it’s
always special when they call Vassar Sportsmanship Award.”
Charlotte beat the Dinwiddie National all-star team 7-4 and lost only to the eventual district champ, the Prince Edward-Farmville all-star team.
Reflecting on his team’s play, Walker said, “The boys played well. We had a real young team. We knew it was going to be a challenge.”
