The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has awarded Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) with the 21st Century Community Learning Center grant for Central Middle School (CMS).
“Being awarded the 21st Century Grant for Central Middle School allows CCPS to provide after-school remediation and quality enrichment activities for students, which would not be possible without the grant,” said CCPS Interim Superintendent Robbie Mason. “This grant also gives CCPS the financial ability to provide programs for the families of our students, as well as the community.”
According to the VDOE, community learning centers operate before and after school, during school breaks, Saturdays and during summer vacation. The centers also provide educational services for families of participating children.
Grant funding for the CMS center totals $187,612 per year for three years and can only be used for that purpose.
The grant funds promote equitable educational opportunities for students by supporting tutoring and activities that complement regular academic programs according to the VDOE.
“Well-designed community programs support the efforts of teachers and schools to improve outcomes for students and engage families in the learning process,” Superintendent of Public Instruction James Lane said.
According to the VDOE, the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program supports the creation of opportunities for academic enrichment during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools.
The program helps students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and mathematics; offers students enrichment activities that complement regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.
