October was National Bullying Prevention Month and in observance, Charlene Haskins, the elementary school counselor, celebrated with numerous activities.
Activities included reading daily quotes during classroom group lessons and providing teachers with the quotes, to read and reinforce to students, through email and hallway posters. The daily quotes were also placed on the school’s webpage.
On Monday, Oct. 7, students and staff wore blue to celebrate ‘World Day of Bullying Prevention,’ and to ‘STOMP Out Bullying.’ During weekly classroom group activities, character education and acts of kindness were emphasized through students writing kindness notes to each other, standing up for one another, including everyone by listening and supporting each other and deciding what action steps should be taken during various bullying scenarios.
Each student in third through fifth grade created a bullying flyer.
On Wednesday, Oct. 23, the entire faculty celebrated ‘Unity Day’ by wearing orange to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and zero tolerance for bullying. The students and staff signed the ‘Unity Day’ poster that was visible in the hallway. Character education and kindness will continue to be a part of the curriculum for the remainder of the year.
