Charlotte County voters elected a new sheriff on Tuesday, Nov. 5, as Royal Freeman captured the title with a large 74.83% of the vote over his opponent J. E. “Joe” Carey Sr.

Carey, who previously made a run for Sheriff, received 24.99% of the votes.

Freeman was victorious with 3,033 votes over Carey, who received 1,013.

Freeman also won in Carey’s Red Oak/Wylliesburg District with 317 votes over Carey’s 266.

There were 7 write-in votes.

Freeman, who currently represents the Bacon/ Saxe District on the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors, said he felt he was a well-qualified candidate and was thankful for the win. “I thank God and all my supporters,” said Freeman, following the election.

Freeman’s term on the Board of Supervisors expires in December, and he did not seek re-election.

The newly elected sheriff says his primary goals will include: treating the citizens of Charlotte County honestly and fairly, supporting deputies as they continue to protect and serve those who live and work in the county, working closely with the schools, state police, and other agencies involved in the many areas of law enforcement, and producing strategies and approaches for dealing with the ongoing drug epidemic situation.

Freeman began his law enforcement career with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office in 1988 and has continued to serve for more than 30 years.

Current Sheriff Thomas Jones commented on Freeman’s victory. “I think Royal is going to do a fantastic job,” said Jones. “He’s been with the department for 31 years, and he cares about the people and serving their needs … he’s a good Christian man.”
