An abundance of American pride could be felt at Eureka Elementary on Nov. 11 as tribute was paid to approximately 70 veterans and guests. The adorable pre-kindergarteners lined the hallway and waved American flags as the veterans paraded into the gymnasium.

Several dignified fifth graders presided over the program. Kathyrn Graves and Kaleb Nash welcomed the veterans and thanked them for their service and the sacrifices given for our freedom.

Each grade level performed a patriotic song. There were some old favorites, like “Yankee Doodle,” “This Land is Your Land,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag,” along with a few new tunes – “A Grateful Nation” and “Land of the Free.”

Next, was Virginia Davis who read an inspiring poem entitled “Veterans Day.” Then Eddie Jones, dressed from head to toe as Uncle Sam, explained to the students how the concept of “Uncle Sam” got started. Jones (a veteran himself) kicked off the donation drive for McGuire’s Veterans Affairs Medical Center by challenging everyone to bring basic essentials for all the patients at the hospital.

To conclude the assembly, Clara Nelson read about the history of “Taps” and then a recording of this touching instrumental was played. Alex Duffey and Shania Jones thanked the veterans for attending the program and for their service.

Light refreshments were served in the library where the veterans enjoyed socializing with one another. Hopefully, the veterans left Eureka with pride in their hearts for they are truly heroes.

Eureka Elementary Collection Drive will run until Dec. 13. A list of needed items has been sent home with each student and can also be found on Eureka’s website.
