Middle and high school students who are in need in Charlotte County will now have a little warmer winter thanks to a donation of winter coats.

According to Wylliesburg/Red Oak Board of Supervisor representative and member of the Charlotte County Christmas Parents Kay Pierantoni, Walbridge Construction of Detroit, Michigan and other subcontractors who are currently working on projects in Charlotte County recently donated 80 coats.

“When they heard of the county’s Christmas Parent program, they reached out to help,” said Pierantoni. “I think they were impressed with our efforts, and that’s how I initially heard from Vice President of Walbridge Construction, Dave Robson.”

Robson said his company felt privileged to work with the Christmas Parent Program which operates under the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Salvation Army. “At Walbridge we recognize that we have a responsibility to the communities in which we work, it brings us joy knowing that our customers trust in Walbridge and afforded us the opportunity to provide the gift of warmth this holiday.”

Pierantoni says most of the donated coats would be suitable for middle and high

school students.

“That age group is often overlooked, so when this company told me they were willing to help in some way, after discussion with the Charlotte County Public Schools Superintendent Robbie Mason, I planted the idea of a heavy concentration on the older age students,” explained Pierantoni.” As I told them, it’s not just about staying warm at that age .. .clothing is often a contributing factor in their self-esteem … or lack thereof.”

Superintendent Mason said the coats would be placed at as many of the schools as possible, depending on the coat sizes. If a staff member identifies a student who may be in need, he or she can alert the school counselor who can make sure that the student gets a much-needed winter coat, according to Mason.

“I am extremely grateful for this donation,” said Mason. “I am appreciative of the group who donated, but also to the Christmas Parents group for making this happen.”

The Charlotte County Christmas Parents held its distribution day at Randolph-Henry High School on Dec. 7.

Over 200 children were served by the organization thanks to generous donations and volunteers.
