Randolph-Henry High School’s junior varsity (JV) boys basketball team finished the 2019-20 season with a 2-18 record, but Statesmen Head Coach Mark Heintzleman said his players did grow as a team.
“Not all the wins that I saw or have seen came in that winning column,” he said. “We had a lot of small wins, just on the team, whether from somebody working hard in practice to just the guys starting to pick up things defensively or someone growing confidence that you didn’t see just two weeks before.”
The coach pointed to the team’s Dec. 20 contest against visiting Buckingham County High School as the Statesmen’s best game, even though it was a 40-37 loss. He said the Knights had, in his opinion, the best JV player in the district, and the Statesmen had him visibly frustrated due to their tremendous effort on defense.
As for Randolph-Henry standouts, Heintzleman said freshman point guard Ta’Maris Duncan showed leadership on and off the court, commanding the respect of all, and freshman guard/forward Maurice Hurt ended up being the team’s most improved and impactful player on the court.
