On Tuesday, March 14, 2020, Hilda S. Johnson, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend passed away at age 80 at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Hilda was born September 26, 1939 to the late Rev. Merle Shepherd and Mrs. Florence Whitlock Shepherd. She was the beloved wife and best friend of Joe Ed Johnson for sixty-two years.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Wilford Shepheard, G C Shepherd, and Calvin Shepherd; a sister, Linda Crouch; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Shepheard and Geneva Shepherd; and four brothers-in-law, Danny Crouch, Riley Barksdale, Wayne Conner, Don McCutcheon.
Hilda was a devoted member and pianist of Phenix United Methodist Church. She was employed at The Bank of Charlotte County for 36 years. She loved her family more than anything. Next to her family, she enjoyed going on cruises and spending time at the beach. She was known for always having a smile on her face and she had never met a stranger. She will be missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her husband Joe Ed Johnson; daughter, Dolores Johnson Gould; two grandchildren, Laura Gould Midkiff (Thomas) and Jessica Gould; three great grandchildren, Ian Wayne Wilmouth, Cameron Reed Wilmouth, and Avri Grace Midkiff; brothers, Julius Shepheard (Eleanor), Reuban Shepherd (Deanna), Joe Shepherd, and Lloyd Shepherd (Dianne); sisters, Chris McCutcheon, Eilene Conner, Dori’ Kim (Rev. Myung), and Shirley Blanton (Nikki); two sisters-in-law, Martha Shepherd and Shirley Nichols; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff of Lynchburg General Hospital for their care and compassion and stepping in as family when the family was unable to do so and Jeffress Funeral Home and Cremation for handling all arrangements.
A private service was held on April 18, 2020. Condolences may be expressed at www.jeffressfuneralhome.com. Funeral arrangements were by Jeffress Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Brookneal.
