Charlotte County Board of Supervisors (BOS) unanimously voted to extend the personal property and real estate tax due date to June 30 during a special called meeting Monday, April 20.

According to County Treasurer Patrica Berkeley, tax bills will still show a due date of June 5, but with the BOS vote, citizens will have until June 30 to pay in full without being charged late fees or penalties.

Berkeley addressed the BOS during the meeting, recommending that the board not extend the due date no later than June 30, citing several essential services that need to be funded soon.

“We need to get whatever revenue we can and encourage those who can pay to go ahead and pay their bills like normal,” she said. “If they are struggling, they need to call us.”

According to Berkeley, May is when the sale tax revenue will show its true picture as to the impact COVID-19 closures are having on the county.

“Looking at revenues that I’ve been watching every day, you know, they’re, going down,” Berkeley said. “I am not going to give you percentages or figures because I don’t have anything in front of me, but just know, they are going down.”
