Fuqua School announces top graduates

VALEDICTORIAN
Fuqua School’s 2020 valedictorian is Roman Morris Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Rick Davis of Victoria. Roman will attend Liberty University in the fall to major in aeronautics. He graduates summa cum laude and is a member of the Cum Laude Society, an international organization that recognizes academic excellence by inducting the top 20 percent of the senior class.
Roman is a member of the English, History, Math (Mu Alpha Theta), Speech and Debate and Spanish Honor Societies. He has been a member of the varsity football team for one year and the varsity lacrosse team for four years serving as captain his junior and senior years. Roman has served as class president, Student Cooperative Association (SCA) treasurer, and currently as SCA president. Roman has also participated in the Model General Assembly (MGA) program, where he was elected as the Speaker of the House Pro-Temp for the 2020 session and served as the Assistant Secretary General for the Model UN program. Finally, Roman was a participant in Battle of the Brains and on the debate team. Roman enjoys hunting, fishing and hanging out with friends in his spare time. Reflecting back on his experience at Fuqua School, Roman said, “I have been at Fuqua for 14 years, and I have learned that Fuqua is like a family. Once you spend a decade and a half with 30 classmates you have a certain bond that can’t be replicated anywhere else.”
SALUTATORIAN
Fuqua School’s 2020 salutatorian is Audra Leighanne Murphy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Murphy of Prospect. Audra will attend East Carolina University in the fall to major in nursing. She graduates summa cum laude and is a member of the Cum Laude Society.
Audra is a member of the English, History, Math (Mu Alpha Theta), Science and Spanish Honor Societies. She has earned the Silver Service Award, which recognizes more than 100 hours of service in the community. Audra is also the recipient of the Friends of Fuqua Award which recognizes students who have performed more than 15 hours of service to the school. Audra has been a member of the varsity lacrosse team for eight years, and for four out of those eight years, has served as a captain. Audra has also been a member of the varsity cheer squad for four years and the varsity basketball team for one year.
Additionally, Audra participated in the Model General Assembly (MGA), Youth in Government, Envirothon Team, Youth for Christ, FFA and SODA Club. She served as secretary of the SCA as well as class representative. Audra has been involved in the yearbook since her freshman year serving as business manager, assistant editor, co-editor, and editor in chief. Her hobbies include fishing, spending time with her family and friends and water sports. She also enjoys officiating girls lacrosse in her spare time. Commenting on her Fuqua School experience Murphy said, “I am thankful for my 15 years at Fuqua. I have had many great opportunities which have prepared me for college. I am glad to have had so many amazing experiences with my friends and classmates and I look forward to the future.”
GIFTORIAN
Fuqua School’s 2020 giftorian is Mary Katherine Kendall, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. Michael Kendall of Farmville, who will attend Randolph-Macon College in the fall. She graduates summa cum laude and is a member of the Cum Laude Society. Mary Katherine is a member of the Math (Mu Alpha Theta), Science and Theater Honor Societies and has earned the Silver Service Award and Friends of Fuqua Award. Mary Katherine is a member of the SODA club where she has served as president, Youth for Christ, International Club, and participated on the varsity cheer squad for four years. Mary Katherine is an avid dancer having studied ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, hip hop and pointe. Additionally, she has volunteered at Centra Southside Community Hospital for the last three years. She loves her time there as it has fostered her desire to be a physician. Kendall stated, “Fuqua has blessed me with a well-rounded high school experience from rigorous academics, to competitive sports, and extracurricular opportunities that embraced my interests and goals. My favorite part of Fuqua is the family atmosphere. Every student is surrounded by teachers, administrators, and coaches pushing them to do their best and reach their dreams. I leave Fuqua with amazing opportunities ahead because of all the ways Fuqua has shaped me.”
