At the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors special called meeting September 29 the board

discussed a supervisor’s request to put a 4X8 foot sign supporting the sales tax referendum on county property.

Similar small signs were already on county and school board property and a prominent “Vote

Yes” notice was posted on the county’s website (which has since been removed).

The board discussed such signs were political. The county administrator stated the county attorney advised, “The board should neither take a position for or against the referendum.” Despite this advice the board unanimously passed the motion, “Put these signs on the county property for the sales tax referendum.” (Meeting recording is on the county website and discussion starts at 14:22.)

I do not believe political signs should be allowed on county or school board property and the county website should not have been used to campaign for an issue on the ballot. I ask the board to repeal the action allowing referendum signs on county property.
