Randolph-Henry High School senior Joe Reed signed a letter of intent to play football for the University of Virginia last Wednesday as part of National Signing Day.

National Signing Day is the first day that a high school senior can sign a binding scholarship contract with a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) college for football.

Reed first made a verbal commitment to UVa in his sophomore year at Randolph-Henry, when the Cavaliers were under coach Mike London.

“He’s certainly one of the finest young men we have in this school, who has accomplished a tremendous amount since he has been here,” said R-H athletic director Chris Holt. “We believe that we have just scratched the surface of what Joseph is going to be capable of once he moves on to UVa.”

Holt also credited Reed as the most humble player he knew.

Reed will now be coached by first-year coach Bronco Mendenhall, who was officially hired for the UVa position on Dec. 4.

In his high school career, Reed has rushed for over 2,200 yards, passed for 900 yards and has scored over 30 touchdowns. Just this season, he had 392 rushing yards in a single game.

While at UVa in the coming years, Reed hopes to study kinesiology.

Reed is the son of Carlton and Tonya Reed, of Charlotte Court House.

“This will always be my home, and I will never forget about all of you,” said Reed of R-H.
