In one of my devotions this past week I read, “Naturally, we are inclined to be so mathematical and calculating that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing. We imagine that we have to reach some end, but that is not the nature of spiritual life. The nature of spiritual life is that we are certain in our uncertainty.”

There are so many times that I think I have a schedule worked out for the day or week. However, only to find out God had other plans. It resonates with me in the concept Jesus left us in Matthew 28, “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” This “go” literally means, “as you go.”

As Christ followers we should remember that God knows man and woman. He created us. He knows many times that we forget He is in charge. Our spiritual life grows and is nurtured as we trust God with the “as you go” experiences. The day in and day out workings in our lives is subject to only one authority – God.

Many years ago, I was traveling with my son to see my husband for Thanksgiving. He was in training and away from home. As soon as we were an hour away from home, my car broke down. The car was towed to a local garage, but I could not get a ride back home until after my friend got off work. The mechanic from the garage dropped us off at the local Wally World. The manager let us hang out in the snack bar until our ride came.

While we waited, I got to speak with a lot of people, but one man in particular had recently found his faith in Jesus. He had been homeless. It was his first day on the job. On every break, we would talk more and more about God. Then it came up that he did not have a Bible. “As you go,” I was reminded. I reached into my suitcase and gave the man my Bible. Yes, it was inconvenient to break down. I had not planned on it. However, God used my circumstance to do something far beyond myself. I know with certainty that God had that day planned.

Christ followers be encouraged that “God is certain of His plans for you”! (Jeremiah 29). Trust God in the uncertainty.
