Algeier makes state tournament in singles and doubles

The Randolph Henry Lady Statesmen Varsity Tennis Team hit the courts again this week. June 1, competing in the VHSL 2A Regional Singles Tournament.
Grace Algeier and Mary Scruggs represented Randolph Henry at Poquoson. Top seed Grace Algeier faced Prince Edward’s Dima Hamza in the quarterfinals defeating her 6-0, 6-0.
In the regional semifinals, Algeier defeated Bruton’s Ryan Pattisall 6-1, 6-0. In the finals, Algeier defeated Poquoson’s Kristin Kopcyznski 6-0, 6-0. Algeier made history as the first Regional 2A Varsity Girls Champion from Randolph-Henry, dropping only one game all day and winning 36 games in three matches.
She will represent Region A at Virginia Tech in the VHSL State Tournament.
On Saturday, June 5, the number one doubles seed from Randolph-Henry Grace Algeier/Mary Scruggs and the number two doubles seed from Randolph-Henry Emily Tharpe/Sue Kim represented the Statesmen in the 2A Regional Doubles Tournament.
Algeier/Scruggs defeated Prince Edward’s Hicks/Hamza 8-2 in the quarterfinals and Bruton’s Pattisall/Kueser 8-3 in the semifinals to reach the final match.
Tharpe/Kim defeated Bruton’s Garcia/Sakimura 8-1 in the quarterfinals and Prince Edward’s Pena/Edmonds 8-6 in the semifinals to reach the final match.
For the second time this week, school history was made when both teams in the finals were Randolph-Henry teams.
Algeier/Scruggs defeated Tharpe/Kim 8-3 making Algeier/Scruggs 2A Regional Champions and Tharpe/Kim 2A Regional runner-up. Grace Algeier is the first Lady Statesman to win the 2A Regional Singles and 2A Regional Doubles in the same season.
Coach Deborah Laine said she was humbled by the determination and grit of these four girls.
Algeier/Scruggs will compete in the VHSL State Tournament this week at Virginia Tech.
