Just two weeks after opening, Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) face the same battle as most surrounding counties where COVID-19 is on the rise among students.
On Monday, Aug. 23, CCPS Superintendent Robbie Mason confirmed there were nine positive COVID cases throughout the district.
In several surrounding counties, more than 10 to 15 students have tested positive as soon as one week has passed since schools opened for five days of in-person learning.
“We have sent multiple students home to isolate because they were considered close contacts to one of the positive individuals,” Mason said.
Positive cases are traced by the school and reported to the Piedmont Health District case investigator for further tracing and follow-up.
Mason said if the CCPS begins to see outbreaks within specific classrooms, the entire classroom may need to be sent home to isolate for a period of time.
“Any decision to send a classroom of students home to isolate would be made in consultation with the Piedmont Health District,” Mason said. “At this point, we have not experienced any outbreaks that require such measures.”
CCPS is working to maintain control over any spread within its facilities.
The superintendent noted that there are no plans to return to virtual or hybrid instruction.
