A significant rise in COVID-19 cases among Charlotte County Public Schools (CCPS) staff and students is being seen.

CCPS Superintendent Robbie Mason said there were 31 positive cases as of Monday, Aug. 30, compared to just a week ago when there were nine.

“Our confirmed positive COVID cases continue to increase,” Mason said. “Our numbers are mirroring the numbers in the county as a whole.”

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) reported a total of 41 new COVID-19 cases for Charlotte County from Monday, Aug. 23, to Monday, Aug. 30, bringing Charlotte’s cumulative case total since the beginning of the pandemic to 992.

Mason said while having numerous students who have been quarantined for the exposure, he has received many calls about the possibility of closing schools.

“It is important to understand that closing schools for COVID must be done in consultation with the health district,” Mason said. “After conferring with the Piedmont Health District officials, our positive case count does not necessitate school closures.”

Positive cases are traced by the school and reported to the Piedmont Health District case investigator for further tracing and follow-up.

Mason said if CCPS begins to see outbreaks within specific classrooms, the entire classroom may need to be sent home to isolate for a period of time.
