In 2022, the Charlotte Lions Club submitted a proposal for the Lions of Virginia Foundation Inc. Humanitarian Grant sponsored by the state organization. The Charlotte Lions organization was interested in finding a project that would be beneficial to both the school division and to community organizations.
The proposal that was submitted was for an open, outdoor classroom space on the grounds between Central Middle School (CMS) and Randolph-Henry High School (R-H). The intent was to create a space that could be utilized by CMS and R-H classes during the day when the weather is suitable, as well as by community organizations who may be exploring outdoor meeting areas after school hours.
The Charlotte Lions were notified in May of 2022 that they were awarded the grant. The Lions of Virginia Foundation Inc. funded the majority of the grant with the Charlotte Lions contributing the required $5,000 local match. Charlotte County Public School (CCPS) officials were notified by the Lions Club and the project was approved by the Charlotte County School Board in September of 2022. Construction on the outdoor classroom began in October of 2022 and is near completion.
Charlotte Lions President, Butch Shook, stated that, “The Charlotte Lions Club has served the citizens of Charlotte County for 50 years. It is an honor for us to partner with the Lions of Virginia Foundation Inc. to construct the outdoor classroom for CMS and R-H.”
Dr. Robbie Mason, CCPS Superintendent, commented that, “We are extremely grateful to the Charlotte Lions for their grant submission which has provided our students and teachers with a very well-constructed and functional space for instructional use during the school day. This space can also be used as a meeting space for our extra-curricular programs and for community organizations outside school hours. Financially, this project would have never been possible without the funding provided by the Lions of VA Humanitarian Grant.”
