Supervisor Walt Bailey has been recognized for his 50 years of volunteer service in the fire industry by the General Assembly.

On Monday, Aug, 14 during the monthly board of supervisors meeting, Senator Frank Ruff presented Baily with a resolution honoring him and his service.

Bailey has been the longtime Chief of the Phenix Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Charlotte County Volunteer Rescue Squad.

Bailey began his service with the Phenix Volunteer Fire Department in 1973 and has been the department’s chief for the last 40 years.

Bailey was a founding member of the Charlotte County Fire and Rescue Association and served the organization as president for 27 terms, and was a member of the Lynchburg Fire Department from 1981 to 2012, retiring as deputy chief of operations.

Walt Bailey has also made an impact at the state level as president of the Virginia Fire Chiefs Association in 2012 and then as a member of the Virginia Fire Services Board since 2013, serving on the board as chair for an unprecedented seven years and receiving an appointment to his third term from Governor Glenn Youngkin in 2022.

Bailey’s efforts on the regional level include serving on the board of directors of the Old Dominion Emergency Medical Services Alliance (OVEMSA) since 2016, including as president of the organization’s South Central Sub-Council since 2018 and as vice-chair since 2019.
