The Randolph-Henry High School varsity softball team took home two wins last week after defeating Cumberland 20-10 and Liberty Christian 9-4, and seeing a grand slam by Maggie Adams.

In their first game last week, the team traveled to Cumberland and took six innings to control the game.

R-H fell behind 3-1 after the first inning, before going up 5-3 on a home run by Cymirra Shuford in the top of the third inning.

The Dukes then snuck by with seven runs, giving them the lead after the third inning. However, that didn’t stop the Statesmen, who rallied and then saw Adams hit a grand slam in the sixth inning.

R-H was led at the plate by Dominque Dews with three hits, including a double.

Lindsey Kunath went the distance on the mound, striking out six.

Randolph-Henry then hit the road on Thursday and traveled to Liberty University to face LCA.

The Statesmen opened the scoring with three runs in the first inning. But, LCA returned with three of their own.

Although the teams saw a 30-minute lightning delay and a 30-minute hail delay, Randolph-Henry could not be fazed.

The Statesmen improved as the game went on and took the lead in the sixth inning with five runs.

Again, Dews led the team at the plate with three hits, including two doubles. Adams, Liz Devin, Taylor Johnson and Kimmi Horsefall collected two hits each.

Kunath struck out three and gave up six hits.

“I am proud of the team after starting so slow, and then coming back with two big wins,” said coach Deborah Laine.

“I am also pleased with how well the team is hitting, averaging 14 hits a game.”

The Lady Statesmen will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Buckingham County High School for a 5 p.m. game.

The girls will then play on Tuesday when they host Nottoway High School at 6 p.m. They will then host Central Lunenburg in a doubleheader on Thursday, April 21, beginning at 5 p.m.
