Each year, a church association rally and talent show takes center stage in Keysville, allowing residents to demonstrate their skills. Bluestone-Harmony Baptist Association and Ministries (BHBA) is based out of Keysville, but the group has more than 70 member churches, including in the surrounding counties. And each year, for the past 47 years, all of the churches gather together to celebrate and put the spotlight on some local talent.
Beyond that, one competitor is recognized as either queen or king for that year. Now throughout the event’s history, there have been six queens and four kings crowned. Some have only reigned for one year and others more than that. Now, after the latest celebration on March 10, you can add one more king to the list.
At the recent event, the 2023 BHBA winning queen, Springfield Baptist Church member Alyssa Meadows relinquished her queenship. Another Springfield Baptist member, Kendrick Williams, was crowned King. Runner-Ups included Robin Whitehead of Lone Oak Baptist Church in Lunenburg and Michala Day-Payne of Wharton Memorial Baptist Church. Michala is an English 11 teacher at George Washington High School in Danville. She is the wife of George Payne Jr. and the daughter of Deborah Day.
The twelve-year old King Kendrick and his aunt Akisha Williams performed with a song and were accompanied by his grandfather Kenneth Williams. King Kendrick loves sports, especially basketball. Springfield Baptist Church in Meherrin has held this position as host for a total of 11 straight years.
