This will be my last column for The Charlotte Gazette. I will preach my last sermon as the pastor of Drakes Branch Baptist Church this Sunday. I have been called as the pastor of Goshen Baptist Church in Spotsylvania. Therefore, my family and I will be moving to Spotsylvania County at the end of this month.

As I reflect on seven years living in Charlotte County, my mind is flooded with memories.

You have been so welcoming to me and my family. I will carry with me the impact that so many of you have made on my life.

To the kids that I had the privilege of coaching in county soccer and at Central Middle School: Thank you.  Watching you grow in your skills as soccer players was great. But now watching you grow into young men and young women is even better.

So much lies ahead for you. Work hard, do your best and know that I am cheering for you. Parents, thank you for entrusting your children to me. As a parent myself now, I do not take that stewardship lightly.

To the residents and staff at the Drakes Branch Elderly Apartments, what a privilege it has been to lead Bible study with you each week.

You have been such a blessing to me. Thank you for your faithfulness in coming each week with a desire to hear and know the Word of God. May God continue to grow your knowledge of and commitment to Him.

To you, the readers of The Charlotte Gazette, thank you for reading. So many times I have had you come up to me to tell me how much you enjoy this column because you recognized me from my picture in the newspaper.

I am thankful to Hannah (Davis) and her team for the opportunity to write this column. It has been a blessing to me, and I trust to you as well.

To so many others, I cannot possibly mention you all. So many names and faces are racing through my mind. I want you to know that I appreciate you.

Thank you for welcoming my family and me. Thank you for giving me opportunities to be involved in the community. Thank you for all you do to make Charlotte County a better place to live.

To the people of Drakes Branch Baptist Church, I could write a book here and would not even begin to unpack my appreciation to you.

Seven years ago you welcomed a 21-year-old single college student as your pastor of Children’s Ministry and Outreach. Nearly three years ago, you chose to call me as your senior pastor. 

You’ve challenged and encouraged me. You’ve been patient with me. I trust I have ministered to you over the last seven years, but your investment in my life will never be forgotten. You are a people who love God, His Word and are committed to making His name known in Charlotte County and to the ends of the earth. Thank you for everything.

Saying goodbye is hard. It’s the friendships that are developed over time that make it so difficult. So in many ways it’s good that it’s hard.

I am excited about what’s ahead, but will never forget my time with you in Charlotte County. Thank you, and goodbye.
