Recent Randolph-Henry High School graduate and multi sport star Maggie Adams continued to demonstrate impressive ability on the golf course by finishing as the overall female medalist in the Piedmont Junior Golf Tournament on Thursday at the Farmville Municipal Golf Course.

Her nine-hole score of 37 also helped her win the girls 14- to 17-year-old division of the tourney.

“It feels great,” she said of having won.

The key to victory for Adams came from a surprising source as she said it was “probably my putting. My putting is usually my weakest point, but I was putting well today, except that one three-putt.”

She noted that normally the strength of her game is her drive.

Helping push Adams was Emily Coppedge, who played alongside her and narrowly came in second.

“She shot 39, and we were right at it each time,” Adams said. “She would shoot a four on a hole, and I would shoot a four, and it was nerve-racking.”

But Adams did not mind the pressure.

“I like it because it makes me play better,” she said.

She said players pushed each other a lot in high school golf, not just in tournaments but also in practice.

A standout player on the Randolph-Henry softball team and a veteran of the volleyball court, Adams has been playing golf for a relatively short time and this is just her second year participating in Piedmont Junior Golf tournaments.

Nevertheless, she is quite skilled on the links and plans to play golf for Longwood University.

“I was just looking for something new,” she said on what attracted her to golf. “ My whole family plays golf. My brothers play golf, and it was time for a change. So, I was just ready to try golf.”

Having fallen in love with the game, she said she appreciates how it is a sport where her performance is ultimately under her control. And when she competes, it is not only against her opponents but also against herself.

“I want to beat my score every time,” she said. “I just want to get it lower every time, just try to improve. You always have to improve on something.”

She said she appreciates the Piedmont Junior Golf tournaments because “the competition’s really good here, I think. I know more people here.”

Farmville Municipal Golf Course playing host this time was helpful to Adams, not only because it was familiar to her, but it is also nearby.

“I probably play here once every other month probably,” she said. “But I live 15 minutes down the road, so it’s convenient.”
