The Virginia High School League (VHSL) All-Star Softball and Baseball Games in Lynchburg last week featured a couple of recent graduates of Randolph-Henry High School — Maggie Adams and Cameron Vassar, respectively.

Vassar got the start on the mound for the East all-star team and pitched the first two innings of the game.

“It was an amazing experience,” Vassar said. “Not only I got to play with the best of the best in the state, but I also got to play with old-time friends who I would play with when I was younger.”

His head coach at Randolph-Henry, J.R. Allen, attended the game and said, “He did well. He came out and gave up a couple hits right off the bat. I contribute that to not throwing a whole lot since we finished our season … But he settled down and got out of it. I think he gave up two runs in the first inning on three hits, and he pitched a shut-down second inning.”

His team lost narrowly, 7-6.

Vassar was playing against some future teammates of James Madison, where he will be attending in the fall on a partial athletic scholarship.

This spring, Vassar was named the conference and regional Player of the Year, and he made the all-state first team.

Adams played six innings in the all-star softball game, which went 11 innings. Her team, the West, lost 9-8, but she reached base in each of her three times at bat and played good defense.

Her father, Michael Adams, who was also an assistant varsity softball coach at Randolph-Henry, said, “She had a good day.”

Excited to play with future Division I college softball players, Maggie Adams said, “It was amazing. It’s a really humbling experience just to be able to be on a team with them.”

A multi-sport star, Adams plans to play golf at Longwood University. This past season, she was a first team all-conference selection for softball and runner-up for conference Player of the Year.
