Heading into the public hearing where Charlotte Court House residents had an opportunity to voice concerns about plans for a new town park, public response to the proposal had been largely positive.
After taking the public’s thoughts into consideration related to the June 16 public hearing at the Town Office, the Charlotte Court House Town Council voted unanimously to approve a conditional use permit that will allow for a long-awaited playground to be built on the lot adjoining the Town Hall.
“From what we have observed so far, approval to build the park has generally received positive (public reception),” Charlotte Court House Town Manager Sara Crawford shared with The Gazette.
Aimed at children between the ages of 3 and 12, the playground will offer a safe and accessible area for recreation, providing a much-needed addition for local families, the town the administration said. The play space for the Charlotte County community was proposed to be built at 350 George Washington Highway, a project that’s been in development for over a decade, with limited public park options currently available to Charlotte Court House residents.
“The Town Council has a strong sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in making the playground a reality,” said Crawford, who was named the town’s first manager in 2023.
Crawford said Charlotte Court House hopes to begin the project later this year. Funding for the new community space will come through the town’s fiscal year 2026 budget, which allocates $50,000 towards its development.
Another amendment for Charlotte Court House
In a related measure up for vote, the Town Council approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance based on recommendation from the Planning Commission that will allow pools, parks and playgrounds as conditional uses in the business zoning district. The amendment gives the town flexibility and opportunity to make plans for play space use in the future.
“The Town Council hopes the project (next to the Town Office) can be completed by Fall 2025,” Crawford explained. “We welcome questions, comments, and support as we move forward.”
