We are excited about the Farmville Area Habitat for Humanity’s plans in Charlotte County this year.

As we reported recently, the organization has big plans for the new year. Habitat Community Outreach Director Sam Rabon talked about the county’s leadership team, which only started up a little more than a year ago. He said the group has “worked very hard to lay the foundation for a solid program” here.

Habitat recently took ownership of a long-vacant home in Charlotte Court House. After a partnering contractor inspected it, Habitat decided a home rehabilitation would be a good idea.

In coming months, a group of professionals and volunteers will assist new homeowners in transforming the structure into a safe, decent, affordable home. As with all Habitat homes, the new owners will take homeowner education classes and put sweat equity in the home by working alongside the professionals and volunteers. That, in turn, will allow them to pay an affordable monthly mortgage.

In addition, Rabon recently told The Charlotte Gazette Habitat is going through applications for its “A Brush with Kindness” home preservation program. “This is to assist homeowners with minor, exterior repairs,” Rabon said. “We have a gentleman in Charlotte Courthouse who has been approved and will begin repairs there in January.”

Habitat follows the housing version of “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” They’re giving families and opportunity to work on houses to make them, truly, home.
