Longwood Lacrosse coach steps down

Longwood Lacrosse Head Coach Kylar Ferguson has stepped down as the team’s lacrosse coach to accept the head coaching position at Life University.

Ferguson’s tenure finishes after her second season at the helm of the Longwood lacrosse program where she led the Lancers to the Big South Tournament for the first time in five seasons.

“I want to say thank you to Kylar for her work leading our team over the past two seasons,” said Hall. We are very proud of the foundation she built and the culture she established within her team. We are excited to continue to build on that foundation and the positive momentum of the program. We wish her the best going forward.”

In her final season in Farmville, Ferguson guided the Lancers back into the top four in the Big South, with the Lancers tying the team record with five league wins. She worked with the players to build a team culture that both believed and celebrated together.

A youthful Lancer squad went 5-3 in Big South play and also posted a five-game winning streak, the team’s sixth five game winning streak in the past two decades. The team’s camaraderie and depth, along with solid leadership, powered the team to a fourth-place finish in the Big South standings for a spot in the Big South Tournament.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to be a part of this team,” said Ferguson, who guided the team to an 8-10 record this year. “The young women here worked incredibly hard together to uplift one another and never quit. It has been a very special time in my life to feel included in the Lancer family. I wish this team and Lancer Nation all the best going forward and am a forever fan. Go Wood.”

Julia Koenig, Riley McDonald and Claire Libby all earned All-Big South nods, with Koenig being an All-Big South First Team selection while McDonald and Libby garnered All-Big South Second Team honors.

McDonald broke a pair of records during the season, scoring 63 goals to break the single-season goals record to go with 20 free position goals, also the program record. Koenig posted 83 draw controls, the second-most in single season in team history. Miranda Helfenbein tallied 38 CT’s, the fourth-most in a single season in team history as well.

The Lancers had seven players score at least 10 goals and total at least 20 points each, with the team In her two seasons, Ferguson led the team to a 12-22 record against challenging slates, and she was 2-0 against George Mason along with signature wins over Stetson, Kennesaw State and Youngstown State in addition to conference foes.

A search is underway for the next leader of the Longwood Women’s Lacrosse program.
