VDOT warns of possible icy roads Saturday night, Sunday morning
Motorists are urged not to drive as low temperatures may cause slick conditions Saturday evening into Sunday morning, according to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
“Motorists should be prepared for potentially slippery roads in Virginia this evening through tomorrow morning,” officials said in the release. “Most road conditions are clear to minor with patches of snow, ice or slush. However, a combination of wet roads and low temperatures tonight could produce icy conditions. Light snow is also expected in portions of the commonwealth which could add to slick conditions.”
The release noted that VDOT crews are continuing to monitor and treat roadways as necessary and will keep doing so as long as conditions exist.
“Controlling cars on icy roads is extremely difficult,” officials said. “It’s best to stay off the roads. If you must be out, take it very slow, leave ample room between your vehicle and the one ahead of you, do not brake suddenly and make sure your car is in safe winter driving condition. As drivers encounter slow-moving equipment, such as snowplows, slow down and allow operators the right of way.”
