In observance of National Suicide Prevention Month (September), Southside Virginia Community College Disability Services and Student Activities Offices recently sponsored a Suicide Awareness Shoe Display.
According to the most recent data available in 2017, 32 individuals died by suicide in SVCC’s service area. To bring awareness to the suicide crisis, SVCC created a display that contains the stories of 32 individuals who have died by suicide. To respect the privacy of local families, organizers refrained from using their specific, individual stories. However, the 32 stories that are on display are true and the families/friends of those depicted have chosen to make their loved ones’ stories public.
According to a SVCC press release, “The display has sparked much interest and we are hopeful that it will lead to meaningful conversations about the suicide epidemic, intervention and prevention.”
The display, which was previously at the Christanna Campus in Alberta and at the John H. Daniel Campus in Keysville, is now on display at SVHEC, South Boston and the Estes Center, Chase City through Sept. 27.
